USGA Top Dress for Lawns

When to apply USGA Top Dress for Lawns.

USGA Top Dress for Lawns can be applied anytime, when the grass is actively growing.

Spring & Autumn - application of topdressing will assist in leveling, repairing worn and patchy areas, improving drainage, minimizing thatch and promoting growth. If required it should be done in conjunction with:

Summer - application of up to 3/4" deep topdressing will assist in routine maintenance as worn areas appear. If required it should be done in conjunction with:

How to apply USGA Top Dress for Lawns

Topdressing should only be applied when the grass surface is relatively dry and it should be worked into the foliage. Generally this is done using the back of a rake or stiff brush. The application of the topdressing should not be so much that it smothers the grass when work has finished. Once the operation has been completed, there should be no obvious clumps of topdressing on the surface and the grass should be clearly visible. Watering the lawn when you are finished will put the final touches on the job.

Do not mow immediately after applying the dressing, as mowing may remove some of the dressing and may cause damage and unnecessary wear to the mower.

USGA Top Dressing Sand

This high grade sand is clean, consistent and exceeds recommendations for a top dressing sand. Used for golf course greens and fairway construction as well as maintenance programs. Primarily designed to retain the balance of good drainage with water retention.

Top dressing your lawn will enhance its appearance, stimulate new grass grown, level an uneven lawn, improve drainage and wear and tear and reduce thatch. Top dressing can be done at any time but is probably best done in Spring or Autumn when the ground isn't too dry.

Optimal Steps to Topdressing and Overseeding your lawn:

1) Mow the lawn on a low setting.

2) Aerate the lawn using an aerator. This machine will make holes up to six inches deep in your lawn and will deposit the plugs.

3) Dethatch the lawn and plugs using a power rake or vigorously rake it by hand. This method will save the removal of the soil plugs. Remove the dead grass and thatch.

4) Apply the USGA tufturf Top Dress sand ensuring that you fill the holes with the using a rake or a stiff broom. Level out any areas that may need levelling.

5) Apply tufturf turf starter fertilizer using a hand spreader ensuring even coverage.

6) Apply turfturf.ca over seed mix using a hand spreader, roll out the newly applied seed using a roller fully filled with water.

7) Gently water in and follow a schedule of watering that will keep the lawn moist but not too wet.
